Many people would call my favorite food choice boring and predictable. However, I consider myself a connoisseur of the lowly hamburger.
I have had burgers all over North America from down-and-dirty burger shacks to the finest restaurants such as Daniel Boulud's DBGB Kitchen & Bar in Las Vegas, New York's Old Homestead Steakhouse and other assorted classy joints.
Often these top chefs, in their zeal to outdo one another, create more of a meatloaf concoction than a serious hamburger. This is particularly true when you get into the Kobe beef varieties, which I think are just terrible, despite their astronomical price tags. My favorite burgers are of the down-home variety, handmade with top-notch organic beef and a thick, fresh-toasted bun. I have several favorite burger joints, and not one is from a celebrity chef.

Seasons 52
Seasons 52 is a grill and wine bar with seasonally inspired menus offering ingredients to meals that are lower in calories than comparable restaurant meals. It offers a wine list of more than 90 wines with approximately 60 available by the glass. As of May 27, 2012, there were 23 Seasons 52 restaurants in the United States.
Synergy restaurant
Synergy restaurant houses both a Red Lobster and Olive Garden restaurant in the same building, but ! with sepa! rate front doors, dining rooms and brand-specific menus. It opened a second synergy test location during fiscal 2012.

Alamy Diners want more than Cheddar Bay biscuits these days, and no one knows this better than Red Lobster parent Darden Restaurants (DRI). The casual dining juggernaut behind Red Lobster, Olive Garden, and several smaller chains has been posting uninspiring financial results lately. We'll get another fresh snapshot when it reports quarterly results in two weeks. The last time out was a disaster. Back in September, Darden served up lower-than-expected profitability numbers as business fizzled out at its two marquee concepts. Same-restaurant sales -- an important metric for the industry as it measures how well the average eatery is holding up -- fell 4 percent at Olive Garden and 5 percent at Red Lobster. Darden's other restaurants are faring better for the most part, but it's not as if LongHorn Steakhouse, Bahama Breeze, and Capital Grille can move the needle here. Olive Garden and Red Lobster combine to account for 71 percent of Darden's business. Olive Garden is trying to liven things up by introducing a burger into its menu this month. Red Lobster may want to see what it can do to appeal to a broader audience, too. Have a Burger with Your Unlimited Breadsticks Olive Garden's Italiano Burger is rolling out across the chain this week. It's a hamburger, dolled up with prosciutto, mozzarella cheese, arugula, and marinated tomatoes. The buns are dressed up with a garlic aioli spread. Parmesan garlic fries come on the side. It's clearly Olive Garden's attempt to put an Italian spin on the traditional burger, but naturally there's no reason why you can't strip the sandwich of the Italian garnishes and just order your burger plain. Olive Garden is also introducing a sausage and bell pepper sandwich, but it's a safe bet that it's the Italiano Burger that's going to be turning heads because it helps defuse the "veto factor" that has likely held Olive Garden's performance back in the past. When you are trying to buy the market's best stocks, it's worth checking up on your companies' free cash flow once a quarter or so, to see whether it bears any relationship to the net income in the headlines. That's what we do with this series. Today, we're checking in on Fiesta Restaurant Group (Nasdaq: FRGI ) , whose recent revenue and earnings are plotted below. - [By Roberto Pedone]
Fiesta Restaurant Group (FRGI) owns, operates and franchises fast-casual restaurants under the Pollo Tropical and Taco Cabana brand names. This stock closed up 10.5% to $34.73 in Friday's trading session.

Three-Month Average Volume: 220,525
Volume % Change: 140%From a technical perspective, FRGI ripped sharply higher here right off some near-term support at $30.89 and back above its 50-day moving average of $34.23 with strong upside volume. This move pushed shares of FRGI into breakout territory, since the stock took out some near-term overhead resistance at $33.14. Shares of FRGI are now starting to move within range of triggering another key breakout trade. That trade will hit if FRGI manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance at $35.73 with high volume.
Traders should now look for long-biased trades in FRGI as long as it's trending above its 50-day at $34.23 or above $33 and then once it sustains a move or close above $35.75 with volume that hits near or above 220,525 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then FRGI will set up to re-test or possibly take out its all-time high at $38.84. Any high-volume move above that level will then give FRGI a chance to trend north of $40.

And now it's further differentiating itself from the competition by rolling out, market by market, a novel home delivery service, BK Delivers. Like McDonald's, Burger King and other fast-food restaurants offer more delivery service internationally; here in the U.S. it's a fairly rare occurrence.�

Late last month, "better burger" specialist The Habit Restaurants (HABT) launched an initial public offering that doubled in price within hours of hitting the market. Like a meal from one of The Habit's more traditional fast-food rivals, though, the feeling of satisfaction didn't last: The shares started to drop after the initial euphoria. But that isn't stopping other fast-casual operators from listing on the exchange. They're finding, though, what works in the kitchen isn't necessarily successful on the market. IPOh Yes IPOs of fast-casual chain operators are coming to the market faster than you can get a refill at a soda machine. This year alone has seen the market debut not only of The Habit, but also the Mediterranean-flavored Zoe's Kitchen (ZOES) and West Coast chicken griller El Pollo Loco Holdings (LOCO), among others. Like The Habit, the stocks of the latter two saw impressive first-day rises (although they didn't pop quite as high as those of the burger purveyor). Why the excitement? Some of it can certainly be ascribed to the IPO market itself, which has had a frothy year. As of this writing, 262 companies have gone public, a 25 percent rise over the same period of 2013. In terms of total proceeds from IPOs, 2014 is set to be the best year for at least the past decade. Building a Better Burrito But likely a bigger factor is that the fast-casual segment has one great model that investors are hoping the newcomers can at least partially replicate -- Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG). Since going public in 2006, the stock of the now-ubiquitous chain has gone through the roof. Its IPO was priced at $22 a share and doubled in its first day of trading. www.elpolloloco.com One of this year's hottest initial public offerings is a quick-service restaurant chain that prides itself on its grilled citrus-marinated chicken. El Pollo Loco (LOCO) has seen its stock more than double since it went public at $15 in July. The California-based eatery had its first chance to impress investors with its first quarterly report as a public company on Thursday. It didn't disappoint. Sales inched 6.3 percent higher to $86.9 million, fueled primarily by a 5.4 percent increase in system-wide comparable-restaurant sales. Adjusted earnings climbed 10 percent to $6.1 million -- or 16 cents a share. The results were in line with analyst targets of 16 cents a share in net income on $86.4 million in sales. This isn't the kind of monster growth that investors associate with stocks that double within two months of storming out of the IPO gate, but El Pollo Loco now has the ammo to begin expanding its reach beyond the 401 locations open at the end of June. For investors, El Pollo Loco offers an opportunity to cash in on the fast-casual trend that's been faring better than traditional fast-food chains or casual-dining establishments. Spreading Its Wings Going public has its challenges. It forces companies to live up to Wall Street's quarterly expectations, and that can often get in the way of carrying out long-term growth plans. However, trading publicly gives a company the ability to tap equity markets to raise capital. It also helps validate brands, and that's a pretty big deal for a consumer-facing restaurant operator that relies on third-party franchisees to help build out its empire. A majority of its eateries -- 233 locations, or 58 percent -- are owned and operated by franchisees. Expansion has been slow until now. El Pollo Loco had 347 locations when it originally tried but ultimately failed to go public in 2006. Growing your store count by 16 percent through eight years isn't very impressive. However, maybe a huge part of the problem is continuing momentum toward quick-service restaurants with more upscale images or brands. For just a little more money, consumers can get a quick meal that's a bit healthier or includes fresher, whole ingredients at restaurants such as Chipotle Mexican Grill (NYSE: CMG ) , Panera Bread (NASDAQ: PNRA ) , and Noodles & Co. (NASDAQ: NDLS ) .
