10 Best Internet Stocks To Invest In 2014

Netflix said Sunday it has agreed to a deal with Comcast to ensure that its movies and TV shows stream more quickly, the latest evidence of a shift in the balance of power in favor of Internet service providers and the likelihood of rising prices for consumers.

Emboldened by a mid-January federal appeals court ruling that eliminated "net neutrality" rules, which had prohibited Internet providers from prioritizing content, Comcast and others cable companies are showing signs that they will take a more aggressive stance in how content streams through their "pipes."

Calling it "a mutually beneficial" agreement, Netflix, whose content accounts for nearly a third of evening Internet traffic, and Comcast, the nation's largest Internet provider and cable operator, said the deal will provide Comcast customers "a high-quality Netflix video experience for years to come." Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

AP The criminal investigation that opened Wednesday into General Motors' handling of an ignition flaw linked to 13 deaths adds to legal challenges that threaten to overshadow the company's turnaround. GM (GM), the largest U.S. automaker, is now at the beginning of a potentially years-long road dotted with inquiries, lawsuits, government fines and public skepticism. Besides the U.S. Justice Department probe, GM must answer to Congress, the Transportation Department and lawyers the company hired to investigate itself. Toyota Motor (TM) is still being examined over recalls in 2009-10 related to reports of unintended acceleration in some cars. GM similarly faces repercussions for waiting to recall 1.6 million vehicles last month, even though records show it was aware as far back as 2004 of ignition switches that could slip out of position, cutting off power and deactivating air bags. The crisis arrives weeks after Mary Barra took over as chief executive officer amid rising investor and consumer optimism as GM shook off the last vestiges of its 2009 bankruptcy. "Barra is getting her feet thrown right into the fire," Dave Sullivan, an industry analyst with Southfield, Mich.-based AutoPacific, said in an interview. "There's no way she is going to come out of this looking like some kind of hero. The best thing is to be honest and upfront and hopefully put this to bed as quickly as possible." A spokesman for Detroit-based GM, Greg Martin, declined to comment. Martin said March 10 the company was cooperating with regulators and lawmakers and that it welcomed the opportunity to help "parties have a full understanding of the facts." Consumer Lawsuits GM tumbled 5.1 percent to $35.18 Wednesday, its worst one-day share drop at the close since March 2012. While the immediate financial impact of GM's recall of Chevrolet Cobalts, Pontiac G5s and other vehicles is "insignificant," some hard-to-quantify reputational risk is emerging, Joseph Spak, an RBC Capital Markets a

With the planned Alibaba IPO, more U.S. consumers will no doubt become more familiar with China's largest e-commerce player. Additionally, I will evaluate which institutional investors bought the stock in the recent quarters (institutional backup can tell a lot about a stock), and the initiatives that the company is putting in motion in order to ameliorate its sales and margins.

    Earnings

The first step is analyzing Symantec Corp earnings growth. I am looking for companies that are able to expand both their quarterly and annual earnings by more than 15% a year. Last quarter the company generated 13% quarterly EPS growth when compared to the same quarter last year. Thus, I am not encouraged by SYMC numbers. Past growth winners (Apple, Baidu, etc.) generated consistent quarterly EPS growth above 15% and I am certainly looking for that level before investing.

In addition, SYMC generated three-year average annual EPS growth of 10%. This is an important metric to follow in growth stocks because it highlights how well the stock grew in the past years. I like to invest in companies that are growing consistently.

    Revenue

Let's take a look at SYMC麓s revenue growth. This is a key metric that needs to be analyzed before investing in a company, as it is one of the scarce figures that cannot be modified through accounting tricks and similar dodges.

The company reported a 5% quarterly revenue drop year over year. On the contrary, I look for companies that generate more than 15% in quarterly growth.

When betting on a company, an investor wants to see sales grow or improve over time nd not just in the last reported quarter. Looking at the company financials in comparison to previous years will give participants a much better idea of how well a company is doing. Symantec Corp generated a three-year average annual sales growth rate of 4%.

AP/Jim Mone Is Bitcoin a slam-dunk as the currency of the future? The Sacramento Kings seem to think so. The NBA team recently became the first pro sports franchise to accept Bitcoin as a form of payment. Basketball fans will be able not only to purchase tickets and merchandise online with the digital cryptocurrency, but also to use it to buy souvenirs at the arena come game time. The team is the latest in a growing number of commercial entities finding a slot in their virtual cash registers for Bitcoin. Little by little, momentum is building for a widespread acceptance of the upstart currency. Overstocking The Kings' drive towards the Bitcoin basket comes a week after the big online retailer Overstock.com (OSTK) announced it would start accepting payments in the currency. The move was an instant hit -- the first day the company had the nifty Bitcoin button as an option in its shopping cart, its customers used it to make more than 800 transactions for total sales of around $130,000. Overstock.com was by no means the first online marketplace to accept the currency. Numerous web retailers have been doing so for some time. It's a natural fit, %VIRTUAL-article-sponsoredlinks in a way, since Bitcoin exists solely in the digital realm. Customers booking flights on discount travel operator CheapAir.com, for example, can use Bitcoin to buy their tickets, as can love seekers on dating site OkCupid, owned by IAC/InteractiveCorp (IACI). These digital players are going to have plenty of company. Earlier this month, online games purveyor Zynga (ZNGA) started to dip its toes in the water, announcing that it was testing Bitcoin payments for some of its titles in conjunction with specialist transaction facilitator BitPay. But if Overstock.com didn't get there first, it's still the largest and most prominent e-retailer to take the Bitcoin plunge thus far. This is a big win for the currency and its advocates, and Overstock.com will surely be followed by more well-known comp

CYNK Technology (CYNK), the mysterious over-the-counter stock that at one point broke a $6 billion market cap, dropped roughly 80 percent in its first trades after a Securities and Exchange Commission halt. The SEC halted CYNK for two weeks following a massive rise in the stock's value -- it had been worth only a few cents per share in June, but it jumped above $21 on July 10. The Belize-based CYNK Technology supposedly operates a social networking site, but filings indicate it only has one employee and virtually no assets. Experts told CNBC the week of the SEC halt that they expected CYNK to fall precipitously after reopening, and its first day of trading is proving those predictions correct. When it was halted, the stock was worth just less than $14 per share, and is now below $3 a share after briefly hovering around $5 earlier Friday morning. An OTC Markets spokeswoman told Reuters that CYNK's shares were not trading on its platform, but were occurring over the phone. Earlier this week Reuters reported that OTC's CEO did not expect CYNK to trade on its platform at all after reopening, as no brokerages would file the required paperwork for the stock to trade on their exchanges. An SEC spokesman said that the organization cannot comment on the status of a company after a suspension period ends, citing an online explanation of the process. That document notes that broker-dealers may not solicit investors to trade the previously suspended OTC stock until they satisfy several regulatory requirements. The SEC warned, however, that "unsolicited" trading may occur after a reopening -- as CYNK is now seeing -- but "even though such trading is allowed, it can be very risky for investors without current and reliable information about the company."

Google has updated its installation policies for AdWords affiliates such as browser toolbar makers which became active for most companies early this year. This change led to a number of articles on Seeking Alpha making a short case for AVG and Perion as well as some rebuttals from me and other authors. The biggest flaw in the "short case" was a failure to recognize that Google is not the only game in town. While Google commands a dominant 68% search market share, Bing (MSFT) with 18% and Yahoo (YHOO) with 11% are desperate to keep pace and do not impose equally onerous terms on its affiliates. Conduit dumped Google for Bing almost three years ago for US users. I speculate that the new company will become a predominantly Bing shop (Yahoo also runs on Bing with revenue sharing) removing remaining headwinds from Google policy changes, which put a dent in Perion's and Conduit's revenue this year. If Perion switches to Conduit's search page and toolbar, the switch to Bing for US users would become immediate and automatic.
